Dr. Corey Riermersma, DDS

Corey Riermersma (Ree-mer-sma, for those not fluent in Dutch) is homegrown in Bangor, Maine. He grew up in Orono and graduated from Orono High School and then the University of Maine, Orono in 2017 with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Biology. He continued his education north of the border at Dalhousie University’s School of Dentistry, Nova Scotia, Canada and graduated in 2022 with a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS). Thankfully, his dental school training was only minimally inconvenienced by the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

Dr. Corey grew up around medicine; his father was a pathologist for the State of Maine and his mother was a physician for the US Air Force. It was his high school soccer coach who recommended he shadow a dentist in Bangor, which shifted his interest away from medicine. His decision to pursue dentistry was further reinforced when he shadowed physicians and a surgeon during undergrad and found that the vast majority were regretful over their career choices due to the long hours/schedule.

Dr. Corey had a superb dentist growing up, so never had any fears or phobias in that department, although he does admit to not being a huge fan of heights- good thing our office is a ground floor building! His favorite dental procedures are the “results” ones. He admits getting a thrill from the happy reaction of patients after completing a cosmetic procedure. This is the same reason he enjoys extractions, because it provides immediate pain relief- see; dentists don’t actually want to inflict pain on anyone. Dr. Corey denies having any special superpowers, but we all think he is our very own youthfully ageless looking Brad Pitt from Benjamin Button.

When he’s not at the office, Dr. Corey is still practicing dentistry at the Maine State Prison every Friday. Aside from dentistry, he has a varied repertoire of talents and interests including choir singing, organizing an ever expanding collection of fossils, minerals, and gems, and enjoying an (also ever expanding) collection of cats, including a domestic short hair named Leo, a Siamese named Cleo, and Sophie who may be part Maine coon, part American shorthair, and possibly part Russian blue.
